About Asya
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
Asya Dudko is a figurative sculptor and visual artist whose work merges sculpture, painting, and relief. Born in Russia, she grew up surrounded by the folklore, craftsmanship, and emotional richness of her culture: a source of vivid imagery in subject, colour, and form that continues to inspire her work. This heritage, combined with years of experience, forms the foundation of her distinctive visual style, known for its texture, symbolism, and poetic narrative.
She explores universal themes such as memory, emotion, resilience, and human connection. Her pieces often depict stylised characters imbued with mystery and symbolism, evoking both strength and fragility. Each figure carries its own story, inviting reflection rather than explanation.
Asya has developed a unique sculpting technique using Creative Paperclay, allowing her to build expressive, textured surfaces over wire armatures. Each piece is finished with acrylic and oil and often incorporates a vintage item that helps to reveal the underlying idea.
After moving to the United Kingdom in the early 2000s, Asya embraced new creative opportunities while maintaining a strong connection to her origins. She holds a First-Class Honours Degree in Interior Design, and alongside her studio practice, she is a dedicated tutor, teaching both novice and experienced students.
Asya is an Associate Member of the Society of Women Artists (ASWA) and has exhibited regularly at the Society’s annual exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London, as well as with Galeria Moderna. Her achievements include the John Doubleday Award (2025) and selection as a winner of the VAA Art100 International Award (2025), reflecting her growing recognition within the contemporary art community.
A note from Asya:
''Life is full of mystery, and it is this sense of the unknown that fascinates me and inspires my art. Through my sculptures, I explore contradictions — elements that cannot coexist but find harmony within my work. The characters that I create embody the belief that anything is possible: a Snowball Collector who preserves snow forever, an Unknown Soldier who achieves the impossible, or Moonlight Birds that carry messages from distant worlds. My cultural background is a constant source of inspiration. Objects such as keys, wheels, and bells, alongside recurring motifs including fish, birds with human faces, and winged figures, are drawn from Russian legends and fairy tales. These symbols evoke spiritual and eternal ideas and are often expressed using blue, contrasted with red — colours traditionally associated with divinity and the heavenly realm in Russian culture. While recognising that symbols may hold different meanings across cultures, I believe that these timeless concepts speak universally.
Each sculpture carries its own narrative, often revealing itself gradually. Sometimes an idea arrives fully formed; at other times, it emerges through the act of making, as though the work itself begins to lead the process. For me visual form is the key to unlocking meaning, yet each viewer is invited to bring their own interpretation.
I pay attention to every detail, be it shape, colour, antique or vintage items which I sometimes incorporate into my pieces. I use air drying ‘Creative Paperclay’ which is sculpted over a wire armature and then finished with layers of acrylic and oil paint that merge sculpture with the essence of painting. Relief panels are completed on a canvas board and shaped with 'Creative Paperclay’.
All my pieces are original and are one of a kind.
